Want a Korean Experience?

So on Friday, my school had another day off.  My co-teachers suggest that we go catch a movie.  It's really funny because my co-teachers tell their husbands they still have school so they can go "play."  This was the first time I watched a movie in Korea.  It's cool because the movie is still played in English, but there's Korean subtitles.

Pretty cheap movie ticket.

The Immortals..a little too bloody for a few ladies if you ask me.

Then we went to eat..there's only like one thing on the menu.

Sweet alcohol..supposed to be a different kind of Makkeoli.

Hot beansprout soup.

Koreans making Kimchi outside.

After eating lunch, my teachers took me to a Jjimjilbang (a Korean public bath house).  Many Korean ahjummas and ahjusshis like to chill here.  You can watch TV, take a nap, grab some snacks, go into the saunas or use their fitness facility.  You stay clothed in the jjimjilbang section and it's usually unisex. I'm not sure if all jjimjilbangs have mokyoktangs (gender segregated public-bathtub-type things LOL)..but the one we went to had a mokyoktang too.  Before arriving at the jjimjilbang place, my co-teachers and I agreed we didn't want to see each other naked, so the deal was we would take a bath one at a time and then meet inside the jjimjilbang.  However, because it was my first time, my co-teacher felt that I would most likely need some assistance......awkward..I know.  The "baths" were not really baths..they were more like public hot tubs that you go in naked...without a swimsuit.  I was like only one running around with a towel covering my body while all the other women would just walk around naked.  I know back home, people go into change rooms naked all the time, but you actually go into hot tubs and Jacuzzis naked too.  When I went to hot springs in Taiwan, it was similar but they gave you this towel to wrap around your body, but here ladies are NAKED naked..everywhere..in the change rooms and in the tubs.  They even had an outdoor hot tub.

After sitting in a hot tub for awhile, your skin softens up quite a bit and it's the perfect time for you to take an exfoliating cloth (same idea as a luffa but more abrasive) and scrub all the "dae" (dead skin) off your body.  They have showers were you sit down on stones and wash your body and they have normal showers, but there are no curtains so..everybody can see you.  You get a little less self-conscious the longer you're in there but, it was still super awkward.  I've never seen so many women scrubbing their bodies like so insanely my entire life.  Got to admit, your skin feels super smooth after.  If anybody is germaphobic like I am..you might not want to go into a mokyoktang. This was a very interesting and truly-Korean experience.  I'm glad I experienced it, but I don't think its an experience I would like to have again.

Little towels you get...this is all I had to cover my body with.  I would shuffle sideways along walls so that you can see as little of my body as possible. I couldn't really take more pictures of the Mokyoktang 'cause I mean..women are naked..so if you're curious...just check it out for yourself.  It's awkward though..don't say I didn't warn you.

When you chill in the jjimjilbang, you get to swear these pink outfits LOL.

Inside one of the saunas.  This looked like a giant stone igloo.

Because we suck, we had to go into an ice one right after the hot one.  Never seen one of these before.  Can you tell that the floor is freezing my feet?

Co-teacher and I in the cold one.

There's also this salt one.

Trying to copy the Korean ahjummas..my co-teachers didn't know how to make it the way you see people on TV with the two balls on the side of your head.

Mango juice to stay hydrated.

Soooo..we asked the ahjumma working there how to do it. =P CUTE RIGHT?! LOL

Say whatever you want =P.

<3

So..I don't really know what more to say about this day than..I've never felt more Korean, violated, naked, stared at, awkward and happy all in one day.  I'm glad I had such an interesting day off..buuuuut like I said..I would not mind at all if it never happened again =P.

Hope you guys had a less violated weekend.  To any Americans..Happy Belated Thanksgiving =P

Coffee Prince =D

For those of you who are into Korean dramas, I'm sure you have watched Coffee Prince.  I loved it! So, when I arrived in Korea, I really wanted to check it out.  We looked online and found that the site that gave us directions to where it was shot near Hongdae station.  The instructions told us to take exit 2 but exit 8 was closer.  We ended up just using gogglemaps to find it instead of following the instructions.

Cute little sign.

You can't even see me but I totally got giddy.  Didn't think I would but I did =)

Bigger sign.

6000won for a freakin' Americano.  You have to order and pay before you sit down.

People thinking "you must be a tourist." LOL..technically I'm not =P

Random writing on the walls even though it says "Please don't write."

I HAD TO! =D

<3

=)

Random signatures of famous people.

Makes me want to watch the drama again.

I can no longer watch Korean dramas now that I'm living here..cuteness overload..but for those of you who are still obsessed..I hope this helps =)

Golden Bell + Picnic....Goden Bell?

Today our Grade 5 and 6s competed in a "Golden Bell" quiz/event.  There are 2 rounds.  The first one is T/F and the top 50 students can move on to round 2.  Round 2 consists of multiple choice and fill in the blank general knowledge questions.  I was told the day before that I had to be the MC, read all the questions and wear some sort of "costume."

My "costume." Haha..this was lying around soooo yea..

Typo? LOL

MCs =)

Grade 5s

Principal's speech.

Top 6! Love my 5s!! I wasn't able to get pictures of the students actually competing though =(

Grade 6s during round 2.

 Show your answers please!

Grade 6, top 6.

After Golden Bell, we had lunch and left the school early at 2:00pm.  Every month we have a day where we could leave slightly early.  Today we decided to go to an Art Museum.  One of my co-teachers studied art in university and she said that she used to go to this museum a lot.

It was free but they gave us this.  I think they stamp it and you can use it for parking?

"Competing Life"

"The More, the Better."  I thought this was so cool..dunno why.

From up top.

I wasn't supposed to take a picture of this buuuut..I just pretended like I didn't understand.

There was nothing else really interesting in the museum. So we just went to the gift shop.  I swear other than the TVs..the gift shop was probably the most exciting thing there.

Window display.  COOL!

Fancy chair.

Beauty and the Beast-esque.  I want this.

You can't really see it in the picture, but you can put tea leaves in the plastic/glass thing to steep your tea without having to drink tea leaves =).

"Tea Fishing"  Super cute! but super expensive =( BUT SUPER CUTE!

Teaches you how to use it.  COME ON..the couple are fishing out the tea bags! SUPER CUUUUTE!

Just 'cause =)

The view outside.

"Singing Man"  He sings throughout the day for an hour straight.  First it was kind of cool, but after a minute, you KIND OF want to shoot yourself.  He doesn't so much sing, as he just makes this creepy sound that would freak you out if you heard it alone in the dark.  But his mouth moved =)

My co-teacher bought a mat...

...and blankets.
We decided to kind of camp out/have a picnic.  It was awkward at first but I actually kind of liked it.  Well...until the man started "singing" LOL.

SNACKS!!

<3

I swear my head is bigger but she keeps insisting hers is bigger.  I never really cared about how big my head was until I came to Korea.  FML!

MORE SNACKS!!

KIMBAP and DDEOKBOKKI!!  Can you tell food's my favourite part?!?! =D

My coteacher was lying down and we said she looked homeless so she said "do you want to take a picture?" Of course I did! =P She said don't post it but I'm sure she won't be reading this so I should be safe =).

Even though I don't spend too much time with my co-teachers outside of school, I love the time I do spend with them.  A lot of times they're not even really talking to me but I just feel so comfortable being silent around them.  They really make me feel like a baby sometimes too, it's kind of sweet actually.  They're always worried about me being cold, since my hands are ALWAYS freezing (those of you at home must be so happy that I won't be sticking my hands down your necks for a year =P).  Also, because I have a slight cold, I was also super tired.  Normally, people will just suggest to go home, but my co-teacher just pushed my head on her lap and told me to sleep. LOL..she kept adjusting the blanket to make sure I was warm too.  Some might think it's weird, but I think its comforting =).

Hope you all stay warm and cuddly =)
